With Love, Death
This is a particularly heavy one for me to sing, emotionally speaking, for as fun as the actual tune is. I wrote it in 2020, thinking about a loved one who told me they wanted to die. This is always heavy to hear from someone you love, especially because it’s difficult to see it coming. And it hurts a lot, because you want to be there for them, but there’s only so much we, as individuals, can do for another person in this sort of situation. Still, offering support and understanding, free of judgement, in a moment like this, is absolutely essential and way more powerful than we’re led to believe.
Death, as the final rest, can be a comforting presence. She will take us from this tumultuous existence into something else, somewhere, we presume, eternally quiet. Sometimes, knowing you will die one day feels good. I certainly wouldn’t want to live forever. But she will come, as certain as itself, that’s a guarantee. Listen, Life is rough and cruel enough, but it only happens once. We’re all going to meet its end eventually, you will not escape. So, while we are here, we are meant to take from Life as much as we can, to squeeze from it every last drop of joy, wonder and love; and one thing I believe in blindly is that there is always more of that to find, no matter how hard it seems. When you’re dead, it’s all over — no more people and things to meet, no time to learn, to make or fix mistakes, nothing more. We should not rush that unforgiving end, it will find us eventually. In its own time. You don’t get to decide it, because you’d be doomed to make that decision too early. All I want for the people I love, and for everyone who is loved somewhere, is to go through Life to the fullest, all of it. And when Death does find you, may she find you well and at peace. It’s not meant to save you from Life, but to allow you to rest from it.
Check up on your friends and family, people. Be there for them. And if, yourself, you feel like it’s time to end your journey before it does, know that it’s not the answer. The world will always be a better place with you in it.
If ever you believe you’ve been left alone uncared for
I’m the only one who will be here ‘till the end
Before you know it, I’ll be at your door
And I know I will not leave
So don’t you worry, baby
I’ll always be around
Don’t you worry, child
I’ll be with you soon
And teach you how to fly
If ever you believe that the wait has been too long
I’m here to tell you that your life was meant for you
To treat yourself
All those times you saw the world come by
It’s a different place
You feel unloved, but that ain’t true
Don’t you worry, baby
I’ll always be around
Don’t you worry, child
I’ll be with you soon
And teach you how to fly
You’ve been around, I saw you by
I’d love to leave, you don’t want me
I’m sorry life has let you down
There’s so much you can do
Don’t you worry, baby
I’ll always be around
Don’t you worry, child
I’ll be with you soon, soon
Don’t you worry baby
I’ll always be around
Don’t you worry child
I’ll be with you soon
And teach you how to fly
Teach you how to fly
I’ll be with you…
