Make Me A Magic Spell
Magic is a thing that exists. Science considers our universe four-dimensional as far as we can see, and that’s fair: those are the only dimensions any human being and their instruments can perceive. The fifth dimension is the metaphysical: the same dimension occupied by thought, love, joy, anger, and fear is also the home dimension of magic. And it seeps through to everything that we do, at any time. Being able to perceive magic, talk to it and be friends with it is only a matter of attunement. The physical manifestations of magic are not the shiny arcs of lightning, flashes, sparks and whatever else our stories have conditioned us to associate with it. Instead, they are all constituents of the “mundane”, in the sense of “mundo”, the world: magic is the building blocks of the world we live in. All you need to do is believe, and you’ll start to see it, too.
This particular Magic Spell is inspired by some quite incredible women I’ve come to know along the years, and how they manage to persist and survive in this world even when everything and everyone seems to be against them. In many cases, this fiery will to survive is given the name “arrogance”, but who could call “arrogance” the willingness to fight, to keep living and being oneself? Only a fool. Someone that can move mountains and control the weather surely isn’t to be hurt by landslides or lightning, or by the things the stories they believe in call “magic”: for true magic is ingrained inside of you, and every new moment you keep yourself alive is a glorious triumph.
The cover art for Make Me A Magic Spell was the first time Canadian métis artist Kiley Fediuk worked with Ruby & Rose. Her bold, yet delicate retro design was an immediate fit with the music, capturing the whimsical, magical nature of this track.
Make me a magic spell
A potion for my heart
I know it tastes just like water
But it can feel like stars, yeah
You were the witch that they managed to burn
But the fire was not enough to kill you
You've got blazing eyes that draw me to you
Because your power reflects on me, too
Your crystals on the wall
It's only simple things
Flashes and sparks are a legend
You just have to believe, yeah
Let's slip into our dreams
Somewhere our soul is wanted
They tried to take you down with lightning
But you made it rain somewhere else
The thing that keeps you alive and well
Is what they call your arrogance
Make me a magic spell
Make me a magic spell
Make me a magic spell
Make me a magic spell
