Starcrossed

Love is a great thing, I do believe I have made a case for that in my lyrics. It is great to love and to be loved, and to make sure the world knows that you love and are loved. Sure, some people like to love in silence, all power to them. No one should be forced into that. Unfortunately, not everyone in the world seems to be as friendly to every form of love, out of sheer ignorance, and that means some of us are forced to become impossible lovers, or to only love under the quiet of night, where the buzz of the yellow street lights is the only thing that can be heard above our voices and heads.

This is one of the oldest songs on here, the piano melody dates back to at least ten (!) years before the album came out. An early version was called “When” and it was a song about jealousy, but one day I showed my dearest friend Nátaly the piano part and she ad-libbed the melody and the words in the first verse, which, of course, was lightning in a bottle, and changed the direction of the entire song. The second verse and chorus carry some remains from that early version, but they become much more powerful in the new context. That remains the only co-write on a Ruby & Rose song to date, and those five or so people who know the full story know just how packed with meaning this song’s words become then.

…and whoever hasn’t been “there”, you’re in no place to throw stones.

Lonesome star crossed lovers sitting in the street

Every single night they stay awake

Lonesome star crossed lovers sitting in between the lines

Said “I love you” (Love you)

“All the things I’d do would be for you” (For you)

When two lovers meeting under yellow street lights, night and rain

You can feel the tension rise

She said “baby, what I can’t get from you no one else can give me

But I always find it right inside your eyes”

Said “I love you” (Love you)

“All the things I’d do would be for you” (For you)

“And I don’t wanna lose you, don’t wanna say I’ll leave

But all my fate is telling me makes it so harder to see

I don’t wanna say goodbye!”

Said “I love you” (Love you)

“All the things I’d do would be for you” (For you)

“And I don’t wanna lose you, don’t wanna leave you broken

But all my fate is telling me makes me quiet and unspoken

I never wanted this to happen, be sure it will be hard

But loving through this tough love is what’s keeping warm my blood!”

Keeping warm my blood

Keeping warm my blood

Keeping warm my blood

Keeping warm my blood
