Just Rose
I’ve been called by many names, I’ve given myself many names. You don’t need to know all of them, just like I don’t need to know all of yours. Sometimes I feel like we should all try to know less about each other, and more about ourselves.
When someone tells you their name and how they’d like to be treated, you don’t question it. It’s not your job to question it. To do that would be inelegant at least and disrespectful at most. You will never know that person’s story. Here, we respect all names and pro-names, and we don’t give a single bit of attention to what you look like, yesterday or today. Tell me your name now and all your adjacent words, those are what I’ll call you by and that’s the end of it. I wish the entire rest of the world, unconditionally, would have the dignity to do the same for me.
I used to know you by a different name
When you were in my class in the morning
You say that’s another side of you
And that’s not as you than when I saw you
Drunk at that bar
Partying your life away
Pleading all your friends to stay
Why the shock, then when I do the same?
‘Cause there’s another name you can call me
But I’m still myself, my friend
So please, don’t ask me again
Who are you, Rose?
You say you really want to get to know me
I’m just Rose
I could never dream of being someone else
You will never truly know me
Even if I try to tell
Do you even know yourself?
I used to know you by a different name
When you’d walk the streets at nighttime
You say that’s a life you left
Well, is that as you as when I saw you
Crying, begging me for one more chance,
Challenging me to a dance?
Why the shock, then, when I do the same?
‘Cause there’s another name you can call me
But I’m still myself, my friend
So please, don’t ask me again
Who are you, Rose?
You say you really want to get to know me
I’m just Rose
I could never dream of being someone else
You will never truly know me
Even if I tried to tell
Do you even know yourself?
There’s another name I’ve been using
But I’m still myself, my friend
So please, don’t ask me again
Who are you, Rose?
You say you really want to get to know me
I’m just Rose
I could never dream of being someone else
You will never truly know me
Even if I try to tell
Do you even know yourself?
