Float (She Doesn’t Know)

I’m not much of an illustrator, but I drew something once that I really liked. A portrait of this Crystal Gem-looking young girl, peacefully floating through the galaxy, as the stars and planets passed her by in waves just like the sea. Despite the peace, she had a curious, wide-eyed expression on, and her fluffy hair flowed over her rounded cheeks and flowy dress. On the whim of the moment, I wrote, on her side, the words “spinning ‘lone in space, her eyes galaxies, lies a perfect moon child. She doesn’t know she’s in the future yet.” Then, this didn’t mean anything other than an attempt to capture the ethereal vibe of what I’d drawn. Now, it means everything I live for.

This song’s working title was Opaline, but that was neither catchy nor distinct enough from another (more fitting) song title on the same album, so I changed it to what it is today. I borrow generously from Brasiliense rock, which has always had a deep love affair with reggae. The bass line to this was one of the most fun things I’ve ever had the pleasure of recording. I’d also like to shout-out Chelsea Helm, a true singing wizard who was my vocal coach for this track. Thanks for helping me figure out how I wanted to sound while singing this.

This is not a song about two people.

Want your peace and quiet?

Well, just stay inside

Why’d you worry ‘bout love

When you look so fine?

Why predict the future when the future

Slips right before your eyes

Spinning lone in space, her eyes galaxies

Lies a perfect moon child

She doesn’t know she’s in the future yet

She doesn’t know she is the future

She doesn’t know she’s in the future yet

She doesn’t know she is my future

Let your gravity leave you all behind

Make your flowy dress flow

Let the curves of planets meet your humid eyes

In that pretty soul glow

Waltz with me again, while your past is

Shredded, mangled, torn

I don’t know your name, but I’ve known you

Since the day I was born

‘Cause she doesn’t know she’s in the future yet

She doesn’t know she is the future

She doesn’t know she’s in the future yet

She doesn’t know she is my future

I’ll fall asleep, watch me please

As the peaceful waves surround me

For a moment I see myself as you

But the mirror won’t lie

I wish it would lie to me

She doesn’t know she’s in the future yet

She doesn’t know she is the future

She doesn’t know she’s in the future yet

She doesn’t know she is my future

Take this trip with me through all constellations

That I see on your skin

Reflect on the sky what your eyes hide

Deep inside your inner sea

Under watchful eyes, it is always hard

To feel safe being yourself

Take this trip with me, my reality

Is I’d rather be nobody else

She doesn’t know she’s in the future yet

She doesn’t know she is the future

She doesn’t know she’s in the future yet

She doesn’t know she is my future
